OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)The gang watch an episode of Nico’s favorite anime, while their teacher talks with a classmate who makes fan art of said show.OUR TAKEFor some reason, this episode is listed on Crunchyroll as “We Got Trapped in a Death Game…(But it Sucked)/ Long Long A Go Go” and describes a plot where Morihito, Kanshi, Keigo, and Miharu (a character who hasn’t even appeared yet) are taken to some sort of Saw-like death trap. Well, while I thought this was some sort of double fake out, apparently this is the plot of the seventeenth episode that just got released today. So, I guess we can just chalk this up to another weird glitch on Crunchyroll’s part, which is not really going to be properly addressed or remedied since they’re the monopoly of official anime dub releases. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, this episode that does not feature our main protagonists virtually at all! Which is actually perfectly fine to do, especially when they have at least a dozen episodes under their belt already. We’re still on cool down from the first big plot point of the series, so shifting to other perspectives is a no brainer at this point in the story. But Witch Watch decided to go a step further by having the first segment of the episode instead be a look at an episode of a fictitious anime within the show’s world, Uron Mirage, and true to this show’s form, it’s tropey as hell.I’m probably overanalyzing this a fair bit, but I usually really appreciate when we get to see an in-universe piece of media in a show, especially if it’s something a character really likes. It would be easy to just do a cheap parody of something recognizable like One Piece or Dragon Ball or HunterxHunter, all of which have been referenced in this show already, but it’s another job entirely coming up with something that feels like it would fit right at home with some Shonen today, as well as make a whole fake opening and ending. The other half of the episode has us check back in with Yuri, the manga loving homeroom teacher, and her somehow not weird friendship with Kukumi, a student who moonlights as a fan artist online, as they discuss things about the anime that we just saw earlier. After some awkward friendship bonding over leaving supportive anonymous comments, the two end up deciding to write a manga together, so maybe that will be a developing plotline in the background as the show continues. But next time it’s back to the main cast, as well as the introduction of another new main character, so hopefully that goes well!
