English Dub Review: Kaiju No. 8 “The Next Generation’s Trial”

A challenge begins for the next generation of the Defense Force.

Our Take:

I can’t believe I’m just now noticing this, but I’m realizing that all the important characters’ weapons are giant. I understand that the kaiju they’re fighting are sometimes quite large, but the weapons seem almost unwieldy; they’re so large. Kikoru doesn’t have any issues with her giant axe, and even though I’m sort of talking smack on it, at least it works. You know what isn’t working? Kafka’s ability to transform into Kaiju No. 8. He’s experiencing performance issues, and it might have something to do with wanting to hold back so he doesn’t hurt anyone, but I think the Defense Force can handle themselves.

I’m a little surprised that this is the second popular anime to feature ants as a villain. I’m not sure if the Japanese hate ants or something because they got hated on in this show and Solo Leveling. Unfortunately, ants aren’t the only problem they have to worry about as Kaiju No. 9 shows up as well. But it seems like there are two of them and not only that but he was able to bring all the ants that were defeated back to life. Kikoru came to Kafka’s rescue but if they are going to win this battle I think they’re going to need Kaiju No. 8.
