Our Take

If you were expecting a really thorough “Road To”-esque episode featuring Brian and Stewie going deep into China then you may be a tad disappointed but in today’s modern-era of American propaganda being more open to being Anti-China than they were say even five to ten years ago, then you’re still going to find a lot to like about this week’s episode of Family Guy.
“China Doll” actually refers to Rupert but we really don’t spend a ton of time on the main plot because boy did we get hit with an atom bomb filled with cutaway gags. Not that I mind a bunch of cutaway gags, but even for me there was maybe one or two that could’ve been pushed to another episode and instead have more time focusing on what Morgan Freeman-err Patrick Meighan’s take on the Chinese mainland.
Helping him do just that is a couple of guest contributions from Korean voice actors Sungwon Cho and Chinese voice actor Matthew Yang King but according to Hollywood these are just “Asian” voice actors so I guess that counts. My big question is why the hell we couldn’t get our old-school pal Robert Wu on this week’s episode? For those that don’t know, Rob was a long-time voice actor for Family Guy and is friggin’ hilarious and I’m not sure why he didn’t a chance to come back and have some fun given that Rob is WAY more Chinese than Sungwon is and probably should deserve higher billing in an episode set in China.
Fun note, Family Guy has definitely been laying it on much more thick to Hollywood celebs with a fun gag at the hands of Richard Gere and a much funnier gag at the hands of John Mulaney who gets TOASTED this week.
As mentioned there were a lot of cutaway gags and all of them were pretty great with my personal favorites being the rapist’s baby, PhoneMD, and Tiktok, that last bit being of particular interest because Family Guy is HUGE on Tiktok so I’m sure that crowd is going to love the gag. Overall a good episode of Family Guy, I just wish we had a few more accouterments to really have fun at China’s expense but then again this is a Disney show so….
