Our Take(Spoilers):

I both love and hate the episode format for this series. I love it because we get to meet a lot of different characters that (so far) have all been enjoyable. I hate it because we start to get to know these characters and fall in love with them, and then we’re whisked away to a new one. But as far as first episodes go, I think Lucky Cyan will end up being just as fascinating as the last two heroes. Though it does create some questions now for how the trust value system works.

Cyan was found as the sole survivor of a plane crash that some think wasn’t an accident. As the episode goes on, we learn that Cyan’s “power” is that she is supernaturally lucky. I thought trust values are what give people their powers, but she seemed to have this power as a child, and I can’t think of many people who would believe in a child in that way.

In case it wasn’t obvious, Cyan goes on to become the idol that Xia Qing went to see in the last episode. I love that we get to see her backstory, and at first it seemed like her story was going to be a bit more happy-go-lucky (haha nice pun?). She made friends with a boy who it sounds like his “power” is the opposite of hers, so they seem like a match made in heaven. Cyan had a cult built up around her lucky ability, and she wanted to escape, and this boy was going to help her. That is, until the owner of the orphanage showed his true colors and used his powers to halt their escape. I can’t wait to see what happens with her next.

From a technical standpoint, this entire episode was animated traditionally. I’m not sure if the CGI-style animation would be too expensive for all episodes or what, but it was nice to get a bit more “normal” animation to watch. I wonder if the entire Lucky Cyan arc will be that way.

I think that we all think that being as lucky as Cyan would be amazing. But people are smart, and they would catch on, and I can imagine the same thing happening to me that happened to Cyan. Perhaps being lucky isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
