English Dub Review: The Unaware Atelier Meister “The Ninth Direction”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Kurt tunnels into the ruins from underground and saves Marlefiss while his allies defeat the demon lord.

Our Take:
It’s easy to see that Kurt picked the worst time to drag Lise into this dangerous battle, especially since his friends are confronting the demon lord’s army.  To be fair, Kurt still has no idea that the demon lord plans to assassinate Lise with his army.  However, that was also due to Yulishia and the others “protecting” him by not telling him about his crucial role.  So, in a way, the blame for this situation is still placed on them.  Luckily for them, Kurt came prepared by placing a special illusion spell on Lise’s sword before they tunneled underneath the ruins, resulting in the demon lord’s demise at the hands of the princess.  At the very least, this young special boy is unintentionally smart under the right circumstances.
This sums up the episode that concludes Kurt’s atelier clan’s first confrontation with a demon lord and the season’s first half.  This specific part of the season usually has something grand to cap off its first six episodes and tease viewers with another high-stakes dilemma.  In this case, Kurt unknowingly became the key to defeating the demon lord’s army, but his powers also caught the attention of another one named Hildegarde.  So, it looks like Kurt’s allies would have to keep themselves on their toes for their next attack.  Of course, that includes Lise, who’s now on the offensive thanks to Kurt’s magic.  As for its plot, “The Ninth Direction” is another boring and predictable outcome that tried and failed to overcome the show’s formulaic narrative, weak voice direction for Marlefiss, and mediocre presentation.  This doesn’t give me much hope for its second half regarding my thoughts on the concept so far, but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s really the case.
