English Dub Review: The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl “Gorilla Lovers of Snow and Fire”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Sophia’s class does field training for the first time, but Sophia gets lost out in the snow!

OUR TAKE

Well, after a week or two of griping about it, I am happy to say that we may be finally out of this annoying one woman pity party that Sophia insisted on putting herself in. I kinda expected she would get out of it by standing up for herself or choosing to fight off a bad guy with her strength when no one else could, or even to just have a nice day with friends that helps boost her self-esteem. All of these and more would have been good ways for her to feel better about herself, and the way they went isn’t so bad either, but it’s still kinda iffy. So, it turns out that all of those squirrels that have been popping up around Sophia at moments she doubts herself were actually Louie, who reveals himself to have gained the blessing of the squirrel god. And it just so happens that one of the times he was around was the last episode when Sophia was sulking and realizing that she had feelings for him, even saying them out loud. And then the whole bomb thing happened and he was scared she might die, and this made him realize he is in love with her too, which is why he was avoiding her after the incident.

As mentioned last time, my first thought about why he was avoiding her was simply that he was busy and more involved with building defenses than her. I wasn’t ruling out that he liked her of course since those two being together is plastered all over the Opening and I have two mostly functioning eyeballs and a working brain with pattern recognition. But I still didn’t really expect things to play out like this or this quickly. And while I’m glad we’re at least getting this out of the way and clearing away a lot of the angst and ennui that was increasingly annoying me before, it also feels like we jumped ahead a bit too fast and squandered chances for the two of them to become more well developed and self-assured people BEFORE becoming a couple, which I think would have been more satisfying. But hey, we’re half way through the series now, so there’s still plenty of time for that to happen after they’ve officially started going out. Unless it turns out I have more disappointment coming for this show, which I am worried may in fact be the case.
