English Dub Review: The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl “A Lovely Gorilla Romance Filled with Danger and Blushing”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Sophia mopes in an attic but encounters some guys with a bomb!

OUR TAKE

And that’s a wrap on this dance storyline, which frankly couldn’t end fast enough. I’ve already gone on AT LENGTH about my issues with it last episode, as well as things about this series that I am very quickly losing my patience about, most of them having to do with Sophia and her increasingly frustrating passive attitude and how quick she is to beat herself up…I mean I do that a lot too but I’M NOT THE PROTAGONIST OF A SHOW. Anyway, thankfully there isn’t a ton of that this week since she actually gets to use her gorilla strength! For good! Against bad guys! Their motives are unclear and will probably be steadily be revealed over the course of the show (which we are now just about halfway done with by the way), but for now it’s just nice to have SOMETHING for Sophia to be able to go all out against and, ya know, show how competent she is and why we should be invested in her improvement as a person. School drama can be interesting to a degree, but we have very quickly hit the limit on what can be done with that in this show.

At least we finally got Carissa to apologize for being such a Cee U Next Tuesday, so hopefully we won’t be seeing more antics from her, but I do wish that this could have been an opportunity for Sophia to stand up for herself. Yeah, the bombing definitely took precedence and she only ended up being in a position to stop it BECAUSE of this bullying and how she handled it, but I really hope we’re not going to see Sophia continue to just take disrespect like this so easily. As for Louie, he seems to begin acting cold towards Sophia after this, which then pushes her anxiety into overdrive, especially since she just realized she has feelings for him (seriously, it took you that long to understand that?), but it’s more likely that he’s just concerned about there being a FREAKING BOMBING that almost happened at the school and he probably still thinks the world of her. Though I’m sure that this misunderstanding will fuel a whole seven episodes worth of anxiety and awkwardness to come which I am…just SO excited to cover. In the meantime, maybe we can see about getting some other characters some development, especially Isaac and Eddie, who didn’t get a whole lot to do here despite being main characters. Or just someone other than Sophia, please.
