English Dub Review: The Dinner Table Detective “Please be aware of two-timing affairs File 2 / The person who dropped it is a VTuber File 1”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

One case is solved and another is begun!

OUR TAKE

After a weird one day delay, we get the dub of this episode! And just like the other episodes, it’s kind of a mess, especially the other episode that has both the ending third of a mystery and the beginning third of another mystery. So yeah, we begin with the conclusion to last week’s story about the guy who was two timing a bunch of women and ended with Kageyama once again just blurting out the answer to the mystery about the culprit because our main character is too much of a dumbass to figure it out herself, apparently. Turns out the guy used elevator shoes because he was insecure about his height, and more importantly, he scammed these women out of money to pay for heightening surgery under the guise he was gonna get a house and live with them. Basically a total scum bag, so the fact they went this route is certainly understandable. So, they catch the criminals and that solves that. I gotta tell ya, this weird splits in the story are really messing with my ability to keep up. Either squeeze it into one episode or stretch it out into two! The main cast is thin enough as it is, so even a little bit of padding for character work would probably go a long way here!

Anyway, the next mystery, which I guess will conclude next week when it has the whole episode to itself, is about the death of a man who was a fan of a really annoying Vtuber (streamers who have animated personas) and seems to have an odd connection to them personally. So that’s neat and all and I’ll focus on it more next week when it’s the main focus of attention, but for now I feel the need to point out that we’re five episodes into this show, nearly halfway, and I feel like I don’t know any of these main characters at all. Reiko, Kageyama, and Kyoichiro are basically cardboard cutouts who are defined by looking dapper and the barest minimum of a personality trait. Let’s get some stories going that get into the backstory and personality! Or why the hell Reiko feels the need to have a mild mannered secret identity when she looks like a fashion model at home. Or at the very least let her solve a mystery without Kageyama for a change. Ugh, whatever, see you next week when they wrap up the Vtuber story.

Error happened.
