Season Review: American Dad Season 19

To be around for nearly 20 seasons, American Dad must be doing something right. Initially seen as a clone of Family Guy, today you can peruse Reddit threads and can often see battles between fans of the longtime FOX series and this one and the “Dadders” are just as ardent as ever. Mosey on over to the overnight ratings, American Dad is one of the few cable TV sitcoms that actually has gone up in the numbers as the season wore on specifically when the show gets weirder and weirder as time goes on.

In American Dad, Stan Smith leads the all-American family in this animated sitcom. Everyday life is taken to the limit as Stan applies the same drastic measures used in his job at the CIA to his home life. Driven by machismo and the American dream, he often is blind to how horribly he fails at his attempts. The series was co-created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman and is produced by 20th Television Animation.

After debuting new episodes for eleven years (the reruns of American Dad will continue to air through 2030), TBS has opted out of the American Dad (and overall original scripted comedy fair) business with FOX announcing that they will be welcoming the return of the OG Animation Domination series with the show’s 20th season and Hulu streaming episodes next day (no more cable gates!).

As for the show’s 19th and final season on TBS, the producers certainly went all out on making sure that the series left the network with a bang featuring a slew of guest stars including Kevin Bacon, Charles Barkley, Bret Hart, Gabriel Iglesias, Michael Imperioli, Leslie Jones, Neal McDonough, Joel McHale and Kyra Sedgwick. In terms of fun episodes, this season had a bunch of them but for my money the second half of the season is where this season was really starting to shine and show that this franchise has shown no hints of slowing down. The likes of Space Jam, White Lotus, Marie Kondo, and an homage to Charlie Chaplin all get a piece of the action this season.

The big question now is, what will a FOX return of American Dad look like? For starters, the TBS series was seen as much of an improvement as any with slightly more crass dialogue, more bat-shit crazy antics, and more, all of which must have worked because the series is one of the most-watched Hulu series right now. FOX can use a hit after a middling result of some of the series that they’ve been releasing as of late, the Dadders could be a good resource to regain some stability.
