Review: Mayor Mochi – Mayo Days,
Jared Corwin (curator for Silver Lake Shorts) and Conor Reed have teamed up to bring to you a new animated comedy pilot series for Adult Swim Smalls called Mayor Mochi. The series is named after the titular character who is a talking Pomeranian that also daylights as the mayor of Paw Peak. On this week’s episode, Paw Peak hosts a festival known as “Mayo Days”, a festival about the town’s fervor over the popular condiment but really it’s just a simple, yet charming, setting for our introduction to our lead poochie who isn’t crazy about the fact that here he is busting his ass marking territories and then someone else comes along and marks over it anyway.
Right off the bat I’m getting heavy vibes from prior Adult Swim animated comedies like Hot Streets and Mr. Pickles more so the latter given that we’re only two-minutes into the show’s first couple of episodes that are planned to debut over the next couple of weeks and we’re already getting blurred out dog phallus.
With animation produced by Conor Reed and with Corwin having written the script and the co-creators providing voices for most of our lead characters and Nate Pringle, Lucia Del Rivero and Paul Louis Smith joining the fray, I think I would’ve liked to have seen a slightly longer short to really sink my teeth into what we’re getting into here. For starters, Mochi’s voice seems a tad rudimentary however I do like this Mitch Oakdale character that could feel like a pastiche of Jerry Smith but because the simpler setting and the establishment of his family responsibilities I’m actually kind of looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
