English Dub Review: The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl “The Gorilla Signs of Affection That I Always Dreamed Of”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Sophia hopes that she’ll fail her exam and return to a normal life, but also makes better friends with Isaac, Freddie, and Louis along the way.

OUR TAKE

Now that we have established the world and premise, as well as given our protagonist a chance to hear the call to adventure, we move onto the obligatory refusal of that call as Sophia first hopes that she does not get approved to be a knight. Since this would be a pretty short show if she got her way, she does in fact pass her exam and moves onto that, but also picks up two more additional potential love interests so that her eventual romance with Louis is not seen coming a mile away…unless you watch the opening, in which case you can see it coming a hundred miles away. Isaac I think was in the first episode being basically the platonic ideal of a golden retriever boyfriend, while Freddie is kind of mysterious like Louis but is also a bit of a brat, and not in the Charlie XCX way. And of course, since all of them are so dang hot and are all weirdly into Sophia, the girls around her put her on a “kill on sight” list because she’s taking attention from three cute guys, one of which is the one most of them like already.

We’re basically still in the territory of the first act, where Sophia is still getting used to her new situation and predicament and hasn’t fully accepted the job of becoming a knight, though before the point when she will eventually make the decision to commit to it totally and fully. And that all depends on what exactly knights do in this world that would give Sophia reason to want to become one, which is up in the air right now. Plus, it’s kind of clear that the focus of this series is pretty much just the romantic drama that will be developing soon, and based on narrative convention, it’s really just about seeing Isaac and Freddie race to the bottom while Louis gets a girlfriend while basically in his sleep. Though hopefully that also means that Sophia gets plenty of opportunities to actually develop her own character while all of this is going on. I mean I can’t imagine they have twelve episodes about a girl learning to use her super strength and she doesn’t get in ANY fights, right? Then again, this doesn’t exactly seem like a fighting type of show, but I guess we’ll see. See ya next week!
