Werner Herzog Announces Animated Adaptation Of “The Twilight World”
Legendary director Werner Herzog is no stranger to adult animation having voiced a half-a-dozen roles on such series as The Simpsons, Metalocalypse, American Dad, Rick and Morty, and The Boondocks, so the fact that he has announced an animated adaptation of one of his books The Twilight World should come as no surprise.
This will be Werner’s first foray into feature-length animation as a director and writer teaming up with Psyop and Sun Creature Studios to adapt the book that follows a Japanese survivor of WW2 that refuses to surrender for over 30 years, kind of like Shutter Island, only this really happened and was inspired by an actual former Japanese intelligence officer named Hiroo Onoda stationed in the Philippines. Michael Arias (Tekkonkinkreet, The Animatrix), and Luca Vitale will be writing the animated adaptation which is expected to kick off production starting in 2026.
