Review: Krapopolis “Love Trap, Baby”

Overview

A mysterious princess hosts a dating competition to find her new partner; Shlub and Deliria do the worst thing possible while Ty’s away — accidentally improving the city.

Our Take

Writer Matt Roller for Krapopolis is a long-time story editor for Rick and Morty and wrote the episode “A Rickle In Time”, can he put out a solid episode of the fledgling FOX animated sitcom? Well, we’re getting two common tropes, a dating competition and a gentrified city so it’s not the strongest start, but maybe the show can make these ideas their own?

A bit. I actually like the fact that Krapopolis when a bit more risque’ this week because it’s a card they play quite often and it’s a card that isn’t played often by the other shows and that’s courtship. Whether it’s Stupe’s kind of cute chase for love or Ty constantly striking out, there’s something pretty unique about a show on the FOX lineup that has a bunch of single characters. These premises never really get a lot of love on the other shows because, for the most part, everyone is married or divorced. In Ty’s case, it’s his constant search for love that makes him a somewhat endearing character and I feel like the writers are starting to tap into that more and more and I’m enjoying it.

I would’ve liked to have seen the gentrified city last a few more weeks before Deliria destroyed it because there was some good ideas for new characters there and I couldn’t help but notice that Duncan Trussell’s voice acting has gotten WAY improved since the show’s first season in his role as Hippo. Yes, I known Duncan was great on The Midnight Gospel, but I feel like his acting is showing up in better droves here especially as he continues to grow into his character.

One of the more impressive aspects of Krapopolis that I’m probably not bringing up enough is the impressive guest cast list. This week it’s Nick and Vanessa Lachey along with Lamorne Morris plus a bevy of others are some good gets for a that’s the lowest-rated in the overnight ratings, maybe some of these big names will help? I’m not sure, but it shows the producers are trying everything they can to keep this one going and I think that’s more of a kudos to Alex Rubens who has the unenviable task of helping fix Dan Harmon’s recent image of his recent one-pump chump series’ that have since been canceled and show that he can make a show without Rick and Morty’s true creative genius…Justin Roiland. It’s so far not happening for Dan, but maybe Alex and help right the ship.
