Review: Invincible “What Have I Done?”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Angstrom Levy plays his masterstroke in releasing multiple versions of Invincible to fight Mark, and not everyone makes it out alive.

OUR TAKE

And here we are, finally at the much anticipated Invincible War, the climactic event that…only has one core comic issue and was technically a crossover with Astounding Wolf-Man, another comic written by creator Robert Kirkman (the wolf-man makes a small cameo in this episode as well). Some even say it was supposed to make fun of Event Comics of the time, which has aged like goddamn wine because comic events have ONLY GOTTEN MORE BLOATED SINCE THEN. But as for this specific adaptation…yeah, it’s pretty brutal, even for the utter massacres this show has done before. Well, more like this was a massacre that actually stuck, because we get to see a lot of heroes die, and among them is none other than Rex Splosion, who a lot of people were predicting was on the chopping block when he started opening up and getting close to Rae, and finally lived up to his name by sploding himself all over one of Mark’s dopplegangers. And the impact of this doesn’t stop there, as Immortal decides to retire from hero life as well (we’ll see how long that lasts), and a good chunk of the planet has been utterly ravaged by the mark the Marks left on it.

As for the Marks themselves, they were all pretty neat takes on Mark Prime’s design and all giving a different flavor of crazy for the brief bit of characterization they all got. Some marks were unhinged like Mohawk Mark and Goggleless Mark, others seemed to take after their elitist supervillain Viltrumite genes and simply looked down on those they fought, and others were more sullen and brooding, while others were something altogether. They certainly added a bit of deranged fun to these grim proceedings, though their orchestrator, Angstrom Levy, still got his comeuppance in the end from his benefactors. Also I guess this means Mark has still technically not killed anyone (even including King Immortal because…well, he’s immortal). And maybe Oliver hasn’t either if the Maulers can be revived as it seemed they might be. Though for now, we have another matter to attend to, as Conquest, a burly old Viltrumite, has arrived on the scene and is right in Mark’s sights, setting the stage for the season finale coming next week. These past few episodes have been hit after hit after hit, both in the literal and metaphorical sense, and I fully expect this next one to bring us home with a bang.
