Review: Grimsburg “Grandaddy Issues”

Overview

Flute and Kang butt heads over Flute’s relationship with Kang’s Great, Great, Great Granddaughter; a bomb threat is called on Grimsburg’s annual Virgin Pageant.

Our Take

One of the more unique traits about Grimsburg is that it’s the only thing on FOX’s lineup that deals with a single-divorced dad as its lead character. For years the FOX lineup only featured forever families that would work through challenges together but seldom reflected a real-life America where over 65% of marriages end in divorce. For my money Grimsburg really works well when it goes in that direction, often with Marvin and Harmony getting into their petty arguments and then Stan sometimes becomes collateral as a result. The other focal point that happens that often isn’t a common trope with the other AniDom lineups is post-divorce dating which is largely the premise for tonight’s episode written by former South Park writer Elizabeth Tippet.

Yep, it’s largely a hookup episode with Marvin leading the single life and it makes for some funny moments like the Jon Hamm-starring character coming face-to-face with John Kang while Marv is trying to put the moves on his granddaughter. I also couldn’t get enough of the various characters that took part in the Virgin Pageant which I think is one of the funnier ideas for a setting that I’ve heard in a while. The introductions through the entry-check point was enough to lock me in but then the rest of the plot goes just as silly making for arguably the funnier of the two plots.

Overall, Grimsburg checks in with a really funny effort this week. Both plots featured lots of funny dialogue with unique premises and ideas that, quite frankly, most of the other AniDom lineup (The Great North features a divorced father, but the series is a much sweeter take on single father-dom) doesn’t really even get a chance to take part in.
