Review: Grimsburg “Daddy Daddy Bang Bang”

Overview

When his dad returns to town, Flute will do anything he can to keep his idol around, even if that means getting rid of his sibling rivalry — his dad’s talking car; the detectives must teach Stan about the birds and the bees.

Our Take

Daddy Daddy refers to guest star JK Simmons as Mitch Flute! Bang Bang could be seen as a car term that refers to a Night Rider parody Pontiac Firebird reminiscent of Night Rider voiced by Joel McHale! Yep, this week’s episode of Grimsburg is a guest-starring jam-packed episode written by long-time Family Guy writer John Viener who claims that this episode may be his last ever writing assignment but who knows with him?

In any event, the A-plot featuring the Night Rider send up was aces in the plot department but some of the dialogue could’ve used a second look in terms of joke punch-ups and the fact that Joel McHale’s character”Jr” kept referring to Marvin as “Flute” which would make more sense if Jr was a random character or one of Marv’s other co-workers but because the lines are coming from a car that seemingly had a symbiotic relationship with the last-name of Flute featured prominently in the episode. If it were me, to avoid any confusion, I would’ve had Joel refer to Marvin as his first name as opposed to his last name.

The B-plot featuring the rest of the cast attempting to teach Stan about sex seemed a little hammy and not a lot of follow through. Kind of thrown together if I’m to be honest and really became more of an annoyance in interrupting the original story. Personally, I think the premise is actually a good one, but probably one deserving of it’s own full episode rather than just an afterthought which is essentially what we got.

Overall, the Night Rider portion of this week’s episode of Grimsburg was pretty strong and next week appears to be the last episode we get for a while so hopefully the show can finish on a strong note.
