Review: Grimsburg “CrimeCon”
Overview
When Flute learns that criminals at CrimeCon are celebrated, not the detectives, he decides to prove that celebrity criminal Damien Flesher is not the reformed cannibal he claims to be; Pentos meets the Pentos-tonix.
Our Take
Numerous animated series have done convention episodes by now, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, The Simpsons and more have all taken their experiences from San Diego Comic Cons and retrofitted them for premises of episodes with mixed results. Podcast producers Christina Friel and Connor Wright check in with the final episode of Grimsburg for a while entitled “CrimeCon”, let’s see if this one should be set free or arrested.
At best I’m a novice fan of true crime docuseries. I’ll check out the occasional Snapped,am caught up with most of the important Netflix crazies, and I’ve been to more conventions than I can count which may or may not have some sort of true crime presence on hand. Really though, this week’s episode of Grimsburg seems to feel indicative of the show’s tropes that typically see Flute make the wrong beat on a would-be criminal only to see a twist show up and this one was a real doozey in that department. That said, the dialogue just seemed really flat tonight, like not a laugh in sight from anything anyone said at any given time. I also couldn’t help but notice that Wynona went from being in a fun “will they, won’t they” storyline with Greg to now having me feel like Flute could very well have caught the eye of the mortician.
I probably had a bit more fun with the Pentos starring B-plot. For starters, we don’t get a lot of Pentos storylines so it was actually kind of refreshing to get more focal on a character that I thought we were going to get more of when this series was first announced. Yes, the plot gets a bit more Rick and Morty with the climax taking place over a vat of acid, but it was the only thing keeping me somewhat entertained throughout the entire episode.
I don’t know when we’ll see Grimsburg again, but I’m kinda mad at the show right now. For starters, we really haven’t seen much of supposed new recurring star Otis voiced by Martin Short which leads me to believe that the character is largely going to be a one-time only deal at this point, so here’s hoping we get to see the second-half of this show’s second season and there being some improvements sooner rather than later.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
