English Dub Review: Honey Lemon Soda “Goodbye, Bumbling Self”

Overview:

Uka’s father is concerned about Hachimitsu High again. Can he be convinced that it’s the right place for her?

Our Take:

When it came to characters getting developed I didn’t expect Ishimori’s dad to be one of them. The first scene of the episode was seeing Ishimori grow up and we see her dad continue to care and love his daughter but becomes maybe a tad bit overprotective. He doesn’t think about her making friends or anything like that and her refusal to do the test for a school she didn’t want to go to seems like the first act of “rebellion” she’s done to him.

On a day when Ishimori goes out with her friends to karaoke, her dad happens to see her on his way home from work. As you can imagine he is not impressed with the company she’s keeping because Miura and her friends look like common delinquents. He decides on his own that she’s going to be transferring schools. In his mind, she was totally happy when she was in middle school and is only now acting out and getting bullied.

This is where some of the problem is on Ishimori, if she had been honest with her father from the beginning we might have never reached this point. Luckily, Ishimori has grown and confronts her father and explains her feelings and he shows growth as a parent and puts his trust in her. Asking her friends to take care of her, but he’s not willing to trust Miura yet.
