Review: Invincible “You’re Not Laughing Now; A Deal With The Devil; You Want A Real Costume, Right?”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Mark gives dating Eve a shot, Cecil crosses a line, and Oliver crosses even more!

OUR TAKE

What the hell? Invincible is back after less than a year? AND they’re not breaking the season in half with a months long break? What new spore of madness is this?! Well yeah, we’re back with the first three episodes of a new season and as much as I would love to go into great detail about all the jaw dropping status quo shifts and massive impacts to every character still alive…I have four more reviews to do today so I am just going to have to go over the general points. First off, Mark and Eve are now dating! This was not a big shock for me since I see pages of the comic posted all over Instagram showing them as a married couple with a kid, but I was curious how we could get to this point, especially since Amber in the show is apparently pretty different. Luckily the hand off to Eve is pretty quick, or at least it feels that way since it’s only been a handful of episodes since Mark and Amber called it quits for good. So yeah, that’s the endgame romance already solidified, that’s probably enough big changes for a good portion of the seaso-

NOPE. Because happening alongside that is a battle with Doc Seismic that leads to Cecil unveiling all of the zombie bots that he’s been working with Sinclair on in secret, as well as bringing on Darkwing II, much to Mark’s shock and anger, ultimately leading to him destroying a ton of them in front of the Guardians and cutting ties with Cecil. As we see from a flashback to how Cecil got his position, and as we HAVE seen from how him trusting Omni-Man led to the mess the world is in now, it’s not hard to understand why he may want some cautionary measures in case Mark goes rogue one day…which is partly shown to be even more understandable when Oliver, Mark’s fast growing half-Viltrumite half-brother starts doing the hero thing and is alarmingly leaning into his dad’s mindset, which may be because he technically isn’t human, just half-superman and half-bug. Anyway, we’re nearly halfway through the season now and Mark is already dating again, his brother is a superhero with a possible fascist streak, the Guardians had their own Civil War, and the prom’s tomorrow. Hopefully next week I can talk in a little more depth about a single episode. Also RIP The Maulers, one of you will be missed but I won’t say which one so you can assume it was either of you.
