Overview

Stan attempts to live forever in order to do everything on his bucket list.

Our Take

It was only a matter of time before one of the big animated sitcoms was going to go the Bryan Johnson route and I’m happy it was American Dad. A classic trope meets a contemporary premise in that we’re seeing Stan doing everything he can to live forever only to find out the hard way why anyone would want to live forever in the first place. Fortunately for us it really doesn’t matter just as long as the laughs are there and that’s exactly the case this week.

This week seemed to have more of an onus on really well written punchlines laden throughout the dialogue, a lot of it quite shocking actually. For example, Stan has to get a blood transfusion from Steve to the point that it nearly kills the kid only for Stan to tell Francine “A lot of Steve’s blood is flowing to my penis right now” which, out of context, sounds ridiculous but when you watch everything going on leading up to that scene it’s even more ostentatious than even just described. Moreover, the episode goes further off the rails when faux depictions of Ringo Starr and Jason Statham arrive and Fran offers to give Jason a little extra attention with no mind for whether or not her husband is in the car with her.

Between Hayley’s falafel feeding to the oft-putting sex scene, American Dad is making these last several episodes on TBS count. Wanna know why it’s one of the most watched shows on Hulu streaming? Because the writers know how to make edgy animated comedy that you can just set up in the background and play and you don’t have to worry about much except whether or not those annoying “are you still watching?” questionnaires pop up. This week’s Kevin Tyler-written episode is no exception and has me continually looking forward to more American Dad in the weeks to come.
