English Dub Review: The Apothecary Diaries “Corpse Fungus”

Overview:

A concubine passes away, and a woman goes missing. Jinshi sends Maomao to investigate – not these incidents, but mushrooms growing in the rear palace.

Our Take:

It’s been a while since we had an episode like this. I remember when the first few episodes were almost like a mystery show because of all the weird things happening around the rear palace that Maomao was tasked with solving. There were still mysteries, of course, but they usually spanned multiple episodes and were bigger mysteries. But these one-episode mysteries are fun and remind me of the series’ early days.

The mystery in this episode was awesome because normally I can figure it out. But in this episode not only did I not figure it out but there was a twist that I did not see coming. Usually, I talk about spoilers because I don’t feel like I can adequately review the episode without mentioning them. I think I’m going to avoid that with this episode though because finding out what happened was such a fun part of the episode I wouldn’t want to ruin it for anyone. What you can take from me about this episode is that it is worth watching and reinvigorates my love of the series.
