English Dub Review: Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms “Basketball Girl with Him”

Overview:

Mona and Medaka encounter Asahi Shonan, a strong-willed basketball star who seems rather confrontational.

Our Take:

I find it funny that people are always embarrassed by their accents in anime and manga. Whenever someone has a Kansai accent or something it’s like the most embarrassing thing for them. I would not be surprised if what wins Medaka over is Mona coming to terms with her accent and letting it loose. When we get to hear her thoughts and her accent comes out it’s really cute so I think that would be her secret weapon to break down Medaka’s barriers.

She might have to resort to such desperate measures because now she has a rival. Asahi Shonan is the first-year star of the basketball team and she has a crush on Medaka. Unlike Mona, she is more honest with her feelings. Sure she freaks out around Medaka like anyone does around their crush but she’s at least willing to admit that she likes him. Mona is still lying to herself and trying to say she is only messing with Medaka to keep her Queen Bee persona intact. But we the audience know better and we know she’s actually in love with with him.
