English Dub Review: Insomniacs After School “The Oldest Star -Methuselah-“

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Ganta takes Isaki to the last leg of their trip and confesses his love.

OUR TAKE

At last, we’ve reached the end of our star crossed journey with Ganta and Isaki, with the two finally officially cementing their affection for each other, for real this time, and facing the unknown void of space as not simply a darkness full of dangers and cosmic uncertainty, but a wide open sky full of infinite possibilities. Ganta, and Isaki to an extent, both previously feared the night as a time of isolation and loneliness. However, since meeting each other, it’s become a time make make special connections, unlock hidden mysteries, and create unforgettable memories. Not only through making as many friends as they have on this journey, but also through finding each other and the special love and friendship they’ve made. Ganta hated the next day and wanted to hold onto the current one as long as possible because there was no guarantee that tomorrow wouldn’t be worse than the next, no matter how much he planned for it. But now, with Isaki and everyone he has gotten to know on this journey, he can face the next day knowing that it can be better, and even if it isn’t, they can brave a bad night together.

Wow, it’s so nice to be able to have something substantive to talk about with this show! And fitting that it’s when we’re finally at the end, where all of the themes and recurring plots all tie together. As mentioned, this show has been a very easy going experience, which is nice if you’re just watching the thing, but not so nice when you have to write hundreds of words each week about over a dozen episodes. So, that kind of puts me in a weird place where I do enjoy the show but find it hard to find interesting things to say while I critically analyze each individual piece of the story. Thankfully these last two turned out to be pretty meaty in terms of things to critique and analyze, so we can at least end these reviews on a somewhat good note, if not for all the backhanded compliments I am very thinly veiling here. And now you, dear reader, get to come back next week and read me summarize all of these points all over again for yet another review about the season as a whole!
