English Dub Review: Blue Exorcist – The Blue Night Saga “More Important Than the Body”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Satan escapes with his new body and newfound knowledge of himself, but soon returns with more power but a body that’s breaking down, demanding a new one, as well as Yuri.

OUR TAKE

I suppose the lesson here is to be careful what you wish for, since I was hoping things would move a bit faster a couple episodes ago and now we’re jumping nearly a decade ahead chronologically to Satan being reborn, becoming cognizant of himself, running away, and then burning through a whole ass body, all within the span of a couple more episodes. Suffice it to say that someone definitely put their foot on the accelerator because we are zooming pretty close to the Blue Night, the main backstory event that this odd manner of flashback is all leading up to showing us. And now that Yuri has, under duress, chosen to be with Satan, the pieces are in place for a certain couple of half-demon twins to be born. Speaking of one of those, Shiro’s presence in this…projecting of the past(?) is becoming increasingly superfluous, which continues to make me wonder what he adds by being here other than being an audience point of view character. It is kind of nice to have a connection to the present here and have these flashbacks to be at least somewhat diegetic, I have a feeling he’s not going to be super interested in seeing how he and Yukio were conceived if he can avoid it.

As for Satan himself, last week mainly showed him being a cranky child who liked Yuri a lot, while this episode shows that he has used his quickly developed mind to become…well, for lack of a better term, an incel? Not in the way that he blames Yuri or society for not getting laid, but more that he just feels pretty petulant and entitled, which I suppose would be a natural extension of his mindset last week if that manchild grew up very quickly. And then he buggers off and comes back not long after with his body having grown a beard and horns while breaking down super fast to the point he’s bleeding out of his eyes. True to form, Lucifer and a few other Demon Kings very quickly pledge loyalty to him, but it probably wouldn’t be much of a spoiler to say that doesn’t work out. But yeah, Satan himself is not really impressing me with how little he’s done and how much of a whiner he is. I guess Rin really got a lot of those genes then, huh. Anyway, next time’s the halfway point, so we’ll see what happens there.
