English Dub Review: Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective “Crimson Curse of the Sorcerer”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
The curse was a murderer. Case solved! But then another curse happens. Case unsolved!
OUR TAKE
Hey, remember when I said this was going to be a two parter? Well, turns out it’s actually going to be a three parter! What a shock! Just like me trying to pad this review as far as I can so you’ll be SHOCKED how much actual review is in this! Probably very little! Okay okay, so last time it appeared as if the supposed curse was caused by some of the researchers taking medication that mixed poorly with the climate of the places they were researching, but then the episode ended with one of the researchers bursting into flames out of seemingly nowhere! So, in the timeless words of House M.D., the game is afoot, and probably Lupus. Well, turns out it was neither, as the funeral for one of the dead researchers is beset by a fire bomb! And later the person who set it is caught and revealed to be the descendant of Enzo, the person whom is in the tomb the researchers dug up, and said descendant wanted revenge for them disturbing the site. However, he was not involved with the bodies that went up in flames, including one more whom Yu notices has a strange rash on him before he is immolated.
So, this episode ended up feeling like kind of a cul-de-sac when all was said and done, huh. Like that fire bombing was sure intense and somewhat exciting, but we’re back at the beginning where we don’t know what the heck is going on with the sudden burnings. Still though, this is interesting, mainly due to the strange means in which these people keep dying, but also because the usual means or expected answers are falling away, increasing the tension as the mystery seemingly continues to grow more complex. Oh, and also there’s some hinting at a possible romance between Yu and Ameku, which is not uncommon in Sherlock Holmes adaptations in recent years…although usually it’s meant as a joke because they’re usually two dudes. Man, they should just pull the trigger on a gay Holmes and Watson show or movie or something and just get it over with, right? Anyway, one more episode to go in this arc, where we will presumably get an answer to whatever the heck is going on with these sudden combustion. Personally, my theory is that they’re just eating way too many Skittles, which are technically a carcinogen.
