GKIDS Launches Ticket Sales & Dub Trailer for ‘Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood’ Ahead of September 4 Premiere
The upcoming animated feature—which marks the debut film from director Yukimitsu Ina (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Star Wars: Visions – Tatooine Rhapsody) and studio SASAYURI—is set to hit North American theaters beginning September 4, 2026. Screenings will be available in both its original Japanese with English subtitles and a brand-new English dub.

A Powerhouse Creative Team with Studio Ghibli Roots
Adapted from Machiko Kyo’s acclaimed manga, the project brings together a notable blend of veteran anime talent and fresh creative voices.
Animation studio SASAYURI was founded by Studio Ghibli alum Hitomi Tateno (My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle). Joining Director Yukimitsu Ina—who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Taku Kishimoto (Haikyu!!, SAKAMOTO DAYS)—are legendary animators Akihiko Yamashita (Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron) and Shinji Otsuka (Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke).
Synopsis & Special Theatrical Bonus
Set during World War II, cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood follows San and Mayu, two young students attending an all-girls school on a tranquil island. When war reaches their shores, they are ordered to help nurse wounded soldiers inside a military hospital hidden within a cave, forcing them to navigate escalating tragedy through the strength of their friendship.
As an added bonus for theatrical moviegoers, screenings will feature an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at composer kensuke ushio’s process creating the film’s musical score.
