English Dub Review: Fairy Tail – 100 Years Quest “Sword Saint; This Hideous World”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Natsu’s team defeat the remainder of Selene’s group, but Selene herself is driven off by Suzaku, and the world of Elentear itself goes haywire, forcing the Fairy Tail team to confront a giant angry face underground.

OUR TAKE

After a weather induced week off, Fairy Tail is back for the home stretch with two of the last three episodes. And if you were hoping for Natsu and the gang to have a final climactic battle against Selene to close out the arc in dramatic fashion…well, prepare to be disappointed. While the Mercphobia arc ended with them facing the Water Dragon God’s power head on and the Aldoron arc concluded with a vanquishing of the Wood Dragon God’s forces…we have no such luck this time, as while Lucy and Gray get some solid fights against Selene’s minions, Selene herself is instead driven away from the fighting by Suzaku, a member of Diabolos’ top team of Dark Dragon Slayer Knights, as well as the one who ate one of Selene’s own dragon children. The fight between them is brief but intense, but it’s clear that it’s really just meant to be a prelude for events to come. Which I guess is fine, not everything needs to be wrapped up right now, especially since Diabolos remains a bigger threat and there are two more dragons out there to deal with. It’s just that it ends up feeling a bit anticlimactic, especially since we’re basically at the end of the season. It would be nice to give the protagonists some sort of clear win at the end.

…Which is where the fights against these giant hands come in, I suppose. Luckily this isn’t something that just comes out of nowhere, as it’s been established that the unique magical nature of Elentear sometimes leads to “fingernail dirt” creatures to manifest when magical energies are disrupted, in this case by Selene. But even when she removes herself from this world, things are still batshit, and are apparently even growing sentience, or at least enough that they are able to make a giant face with tentacles who has made its life’s mission to destroy all of Elentear. So hey, there’s your big season finale battle, just take out the established antagonist who is most connected to the main plot and replace them with a virtually unrelated one who is a lot less interesting. Ah well, just one more episode to go so hopefully they make it count, so see you back here next week for the conclusion to the first season of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest! Unless there’s another winter storm that hits Texas in which case we won’t see you.
