English Dub Review: Dungeon People “Coworkers, Family”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Clay decides to face off with the massive dragon Reilmond in the arena.  She keeps fighting despite sensing her own inexperience in the face of the skilled opponent.

Our Take:

Following a rematch against Shieldberg and his goblin brothers, Clay immediately finds herself in another matchup against a much stronger opponent.  But don’t worry.  The dinosaur-like creature, Reilmond, is just as friendly as the other dungeon monsters.  Considering that the previous episode ended on a cliffhanger, we were expecting something grand out of this seemingly antagonistic presence.  However, since Dungeon People is more of a laid back, slice-of-life-type series, I suppose it wouldn’t feel right for it to take this sharp turn.  Regardless, despite ending in a draw, it still provided an engrossing fight between Clay and her equally matched opponent from the tenth floor.

However, the real meat of the episode is Clay learning to harness her magical power to grow stronger in her speed and accuracy.  She had used her magic to defend herself from Reilmond’s attacks, although this tactic came with the cost of losing her arm.  Fortunately, she got it back upon exiting the arena since her digital copy lost it during the match.  Considering that Reilmond resides on the tenth floor, Clay has a lot of work to do to harness her magical abilities and search for her father.

The episode also delved more into Belle’s past while Clay assists Rangado in equipment making, in which the dungeon was previously run by Belle’s mentor, the Old Master.  After the Old Master departed, Belle felt lonely, with no one to talk to while she monitored the dungeon until Clay showed up.  She does have Rangado since she sees him as family, but their conversations were just as awkwardly humorous as I expected from the series.  This further emphasizes Belle’s desire for friendship, especially with Clay, even outside of their duties, which may hinder Clay’s goal of getting strong enough to defeat her.  It’s still nice to see the show continue developing its characters within its seemingly filler moments while being mildly entertaining with its adorable appeal and humor.
