English Dub Review: Demon Lord, Retry! R “ReVenge”

Organ is in trouble, and it is up to Kunai to save the day.

Our Take:

It’s times like this when I’m glad a series has ended.  As much as I enjoyed specific moments of Demon Lord, Retry!, I hate to say that its second season has been a disappointment since the first episode.  Despite finding its footing in the third episode after two recap episodes, Demon Lord, Retry! R lacked interest in its direction, animation, and hollow plot to keep me engaged.  The first season’s plot involving Kunai’s hot springs business was serviceable enough to glide through its usual harem isekai narrative, but season two?  It’s more like what you expect from a harem isekai anime, with less focus on the hot springs business element and more on Kunai’s quest to get stronger through magic resistance and unintentionally fluster more female characters.

At the very least, the final episodes involving the battle against Archfiend Belphagor injected some intrigue into its underwhelming sophomore season.  Considering the genre’s structure, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.  The season two finale, “ReVenge”, is no different, with the plot consisting of Kunai and Mink rescuing Organ from Belphagor’s torturous methods.  Unsurprisingly, despite Belphagor’s indestructible armor, Kunai managed to kill him through his final boss tactics, including his own arena and a vampire lord form.  However, despite the neat tricks Kunai’s got, it’s still a mediocre way to close off the second season regarding the battle itself and lack of character growth.  The ending involving Akira and his boss, known as XXX, may have been hinting at another season if it were to happen, but unless they find a way to improve the characters, story, and presentation, I will consider myself disinterested in the show’s next update.
