English Dub Review: Insomniacs After School “The Fireworks Star -The Pleiades Star Cluster-“

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The school has its festival and Isaku tells Ganta a secret.

OUR TAKE

And for our first post-Christmas review, we continue the budding romance of Ganta and Isaki with a romantic look at the fireworks AND…a confession of a genetic heart defect that could one day be fatal. Well, I guess that explains why Isaki hinted at pictures being taken of her as leaving a trace behind that she couldn’t. With as much progress as these two have been making getting to know each other, it honestly felt almost TOO easy, so throwing in a bit of momentary tension and drama makes sense to liven things up just a little bit. I mean, liven things up as much as revealing a potentially deadly heart condition can, if indeed there is such a way. The point is that the two of them are growing close enough that they can share these details about themselves, first with their respective insomnia, and now with this from Isaki’s end. Of course, I don’t really expect this heart problem to be much of an issue for the remaining episodes, unless it comes back suddenly near the end for some reason. But it is a neat detail about something that has clearly been impacting Isaki all of her life and may very well shorten it at some point.

The other neat thing that the two of them end up doing is making use of a radio app to communicate in a rather novel way. After Ganta tells Isaki that she can rely on him if she ever has some issue she needs to talk about (and she tearfully collapses in his arms), more direct verbal communication is certainly expected, but the have another issue: They’re teenagers who live with their parents, so trying to talk a lot with someone on the phone is going to get them immediately found out. So, using this weird app to come up with a fake radio show and pass audio notes back and forth is actually pretty sweet and ends up becoming a major bonding moment for them. Though with this line of indirect communication set up and the festival done with, what does that leave for the rest of the season? I suppose taking care of the Astronomy Club is still going to be a focus and there will still be plenty of opportunities for them to get closer, so I guess we have that to look forward to. See ya then!
