English Dub Review: Fairy Tail – 100 Years Quest “Aqua Aera” ; “Selene, the Moon Dragon God”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

After briefly celebrating their victory over Aldoron, Natsu’s team is suddenly transported to Edolas, where they learn the origins of The White Mage’s plans and their connection to Selene.

OUR TAKE

I guess a lot of shows took last week off due to the Thanksgiving holiday because we’ve got two episodes of Fairy Tail for the price of one today! The first episode, which should have aired last week, is a bit of an interlude between the end of the Aldoron arc and the beginning of the next arc, with the target and antagonist switching to the Moon Dragon God, Selene. All of Fairy Tail has officially been recovered from mind control (including Gajeel and his new voice actor Phil Parsons, probably best known for playing Nappa in DBZ and Kenny in Attack on Titan), but Natsu’s team is swiftly teleported away to Edolas, a parallel world previously seen in one of the early arcs of the original series, so I actually remember it somewhat! That arc had different versions of the Fairy Tail cast, with some acting similar to their Earthland counterparts and others acting wildly different, with their Natsu being a lot more shy and pensive while their Lucy more outgoing and brazen, including in their feelings for each other. And for some reason they get to officially get together and have a child, while the main Natsu and Lucy just keep pussyfooting around for however long the story will last.

Anyway, after checking in with their counterparts, we also learn that the White Mage, now revealed to be named Faris, possessed a cat named Touka from her world and then came into Earthland to take over a White Mage cult, all at the behest of Selene. Sounds like a pretty complicated plan all things considered, but the point is that some of these ongoing plotlines are finally getting aired out, and it all leads back to the third of the Dragon Gods to be targeted. Of the four we’ve met, Selene seems to be the most devious and with the most strings she can pull, meaning she’ll be a serious threat, made clear when she sends the group to a third world where magic is much more powerful, and likely unstable. Though oddly enough, this arc is made up of a third less chapters than the Aldoron arc, meaning even less episodes needed to adapt it, but maybe that just means it will have less fat to trim, as the arc we just finished definitely could have done with a few less. But we’ll just have to wait and see where it goes.
