English Dub Review: Demon Lord, Retry! R “ReCovery”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Tensions flare up in Xenovia and their neighboring state of Parma as Kunai, and the gang continue their exploration of Beastkin territory.

Our Take:
Kunai’s journey to Beaskin territory got off to a pretty unusual start, with him and Organ confronting a group of monkey people.  Did it serve a purpose to the plot progression?  Not really, but it was somewhat amusing to see Kunai torture the army’s leader for a bit.  Plus, we learned more about Organ’s past before becoming an adventurer, so at the very least, it should make for an interesting conflict between father and daughter once we reach that point of the season.
But before we even reach that point, we get to see more of Kunai and the others exploring Beastkin territory.  However, what they don’t realize is that trouble is brewing in Xenovia, as Princess Cake has been held captive following the destruction of her kingdom.  Fortunately, her only hope of rescue is Leon, but until then, she’ll have to rely on her manipulation tactics to protect herself from her demonic captor.  Regarding her personality, Princess Cake is another character who’s sweet and harmless on the outside but manipulative on the inside.  It’s hard to say how much of a role she’ll have in future episodes, especially since Kunai has his own business to take care of.  But it is another moment of the season where Kunai’s presence only exists in an episode’s second half.
Speaking of Kunai, the demon lord finds himself in another pickle while exploring with Akane, who may or may not have her own secret to hide.  In addition to finding the shrine of a priestess who has a history with Ophan, Kunai is forced to confront High Demon Kale, whose obsession with torture and death compensates for his childlike appearance.  In a way, this is another detour that showcases Kunai effortlessly embarrassing Kale and rescuing one of the priestess’s children from the High Demon’s cursed scythe in a pretty tame manner.  Hopefully, this will likely be the last detour Kunai and the others will take before they reach their destination because this mission is starting to take longer than it should.
