Secret Level improves upon Tim Miller’s previous Netflix work in Love Death + Robots and that show was a serial Emmy winner. For my money, the storytelling in each of the presented shorts featured far more depth, a good amount of levity, and a respect for a gaming industry that’s about to go through another metamorphosis in the coming year or so.

Several anime have usually succeeded in meeting expectations set by their concepts. However, a few have gone above the limits to surpass them, delivering a level of quality and depth that extends beyond their typical concepts regarding the presentation and direction. Dandadan is the one anime that exceeded those expectations in more ways than one. This seemingly typical addition to the teen rom-com catalog is an inventive and surreally wild ride that utilizes its genre mixture and art style to excellent effect. With its blend of action, teen romance, sci-fi, and supernatural horror, the series is a highly bizarre and visually dazzling experience that succeeds in its entertainment value but never loses sight of its emotion when it matters most. Regarding its lovable protagonists, fantastic animation, refreshing genre tropes, and a superb mixture of comedy and romance, Dandadan is not only one of the best anime of 2024 but also one of the best, period.

Fans of comic book adaptations, and specifically those of James Gunn adaptations, are going to geek out at all of the cameos and Easter eggs and they should. But Creature Commandos feels every bit the comic adaptation from James Gunn as anything he’s done in live-action and might actually surpass a few of those entries in terms of their execution. While most writer/directors with James Gunn’s accolades by now would probably just mail it in with an EP credit and then have someone else write everything, James not only takes on the reigns but ups the ante for future comic adaptations to animation in the future.

Good Times: Back Again may have been given some grief a tad concerning some stereotypical jokes back when the trailer was released, and yes those are here at the behest of not just Black America, but White America as well, however when the series starts leaning into more dramedy it really becomes its own thing and deserving of your attention. Ranada Shepard is the real deal here and you should add this to your watch list.
