Review: Krapopolis “Krapocalypse”

Overview

Tyrannis is stuck in a time loop trying to save the city.

Our Take

There have been numerous movies that have time loops, but if I had to pick the one that mostly aligns with this week’s episode of Krapopolis, I’d have to go with the Tom Cruise-starrer Edge of Tomorrow. And this Matt Roller-written episode is largely a paint-by-numbers cover song of the aforementioned film in that like the one that’s all about an alien apocalypse being played on repeat until Tom Cruise finds a way out of his mess, this episode largely does the same with Tyrannus.

The episode also features a good amount of the pettiness that one Rick Sanchez would exhibit if the star of Rick and Morty had any respect for time travel, especially for the hilariously written Chronos who really puts Tyrannus through all of this due to the fact that the demigod king of Krapopolis constant confuses the pronunciation of the Personification of time with that of Cronos, the King of the Titans. Certainly on the same playing field as “The Vat of Acid” episode for the Adult Swim series, Krapopolis’s take on Chronos by Erik Charles Nielsen is something that I hope we revisit a bunch more times because Erik’s dialogue was hilariously-written and well-acted.

I somewhat like when Krapopolis gives us one main plot to run with, it allows us to watch with hilarity as Tyrannus does his best in being a King who has to figure things out for himself (which was ultimately the plot of the episode as well) and it makes for a fun ride. I actually hope this is a good lesson that we don’t need EVERY character accounted for on EVERY episode.

Is this a comedic cover tune of a movie that has actually grown in a good amount of popularity over the years in the sci-fi subreddits, yes, but it’s a solid comedic cover sang by the drunk guy at a bar that almost-kinda sounds like Steely Dan.
