Review: Bob’s Burgers “Hope N’ Mic Night”

Overview

The kids want to host an open mic night at the restaurant, but the hidden costs keep mounting and Bob worries that the night will ruin them.

Our Take

Not unlike The Simpsons episode that preceded it, this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers is almost like another rendition of shorts featuring various characters doing what this show does best…a bunch of fun songs. In this case we get a lot of lead up to a town-wide talent show that features the likes of the Belcher kids, Teddy/Mort, Marshmallow, and Fischoeder all doing a number of fun songs that are typical of the brand that is this show. One of the most interesting aspects of this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers written by show creator Loren Bouchard is that we get to see the ramifications of this major event play out in the form of what this show is all about, the original pathos if you will, keeping the restaurant open at all costs.

Eric Bauza (Jimmy Pesto) and Jari Jones (Marshmallow) check in as replacement voices for their respective characters which I’ve never endorsed due to the fact that if you’re going to have problems with whomever voiced the original characters, maybe change the characters with the new original actors instead of just replacing what you had. In any event, Marshmallow’s song “Seabird” was definitely one of the highlights of the evening along with Calvin’s take on “Opposites Attract”. Teddy and Mort’s take on “Hold on Loosely” was received by the audience exactly the way I would have and I’m just a bit more disappointed that Sarah Silverman didn’t really get a chance to shine her skills as either a singer/songwriter.

“Draw a Face on Your Butt” is one of the best outros of the season thus far and kind of reminds you of the magic of this show. Loren still knows how to knock ’em dead after fifteen seasons of Bob’s Burgers and we’ll see ya in two weeks for the show’s continuation!
