English Dub Review: Insomniacs After School “The Cat’s Eyes -Upsilon and Lambda Scorpii-“

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Ganta and Isaki try sprucing up the observatory, but get caught by a teacher.

OUR TAKE

Now that our two soon to be love birds have begun their night time flings of running during the night and sleeping during the day (I guess that would make them more like bats if anything haha), it was of course natural that they would get caught by someone at some point. I didn’t quite expect it to be so quick as to happen in the second episode, but then again this sort of arrangement was never going to last that long in its current state without someone noticing, and naturally the person who noticed was going to be a student or teacher. As I predicted last time, this leads to the two of them joining the Astronomy club, so now at least they have some sort of cover for sleeping in the observatory during the day, since they’ll be using it for more above board reasons. What I didn’t expect, though probably should have, was Ganta’s insistence that the two keep their thing a secret from others. He says it’s so they can keep their conditions of insomnia from other people, but I think it’s more likely because he just wants to be able to spend more time with Isaki in private, something he can’t really do if other people feel the need to join in.

Of course, that has gone straight out the goddamn window now that they have to join a club in order to sleep together at all, and yeah it’s both understandable and hilarious that their new advisor Yui’s first thought was that they were having sex. Honestly, that would be a pretty good guess for what two teenagers would be doing in a seemingly deserted place on school grounds when they could find some time alone. And while I know that exploring those kinds of topics is something other high school anime have delved into before, and is something that has its own merit if approached from a specific angle, thankfully it’s not something we’re going to have to deal with in this show and deal with just how awkward that topic would be to write about every single week for three months. Though I have seen pages of future chapters floating around instagram, so I am aware that these characters do end up getting into that EVENTUALLY, just probably not within the chapters that will be adapted in this first and possibly only season. But I guess now we’ll see where things DO take us in the rest of the show.
