English Dub Review: Blue Exorcist – Beyond the Snow Saga “Goodbye to You”

Are those a bunch of snakes in a human suit or are you just happy to see me

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Rin and Yukio confront Hachitaro Okami, the snake demon who cursed Shura and her ancestors.

OUR TAKE

Well, this Shura focused arc seems to be going a lot faster in pacing than I first thought, since it seems we’re already nearly done with it despite only being a third of the way through this season. In fact, apparently we’ll be all done with it by the halfway point in a couple weeks, which I suppose will open up some time for more focus on Yukio’s tragic turned to darkness or something. Kind of a let down that they haven’t really gotten back to any of the Illuminati stuff despite teasing it in the Opening, though I suppose it’s only technically been a few episodes since that so a little intermission from it makes sense at the moment. In the meantime, as mentioned last time, we’re actually getting quite a bit of interesting info on Shura, even if (as also mentioned last time) it opens up some weird implications, especially in this episode when kid Shura immediately jumps to wanting to mate with Shiro in the flashback where he first meets her. And then Hachitaro only doesn’t kill him because that sounds like an acceptable deal, much to his understandable concern. Basically a lot of strong eyebrow raising in these past few episodes, is what I’m getting at here.

But even putting that aside, this episode helps add to the idea that Rin and Yukio are still a pretty good team when they need to be. Rin is definitely more about charging in and throwing his blue fire around like crazy, but Yukio is good at thinking at least a few steps ahead, as seen here when he tries making a deal with Hachitaro with the main goal of removing the curse from Shura. Again, this leads to a very side eye inducing bit where he says out loud that he’ll be impregnating Shura…and this was preceded by a previous thing where Hachitaro tried hypnotizing Shura into forcing herself onto Yukio…basically the more I think about these past few episodes the more concerned I get and am looking forward this arc being over, but I swear it’s not without merit! Thankfully it seems that all of this impregnating stuff is out of the system and we can now focus on just beating up a giant snake demon, which is really what I came here to see in the first place, so let’s get a move on with that already!
