Review: Universal Basic Guys “Jaws of Life”

Overview

Jealous of the attention Tammy gets for saving the life of a choking stranger, Mark buys a Jaws of Life to efficiently save lives; Tammy’s life is threatened when she rejects the advances of Paul, the stranger she saved.

Our Take

The “Jaws of Life” tool refers to an apparatus firefighters use to pry open a car door to save someone from a car accident and apparently is readily available to buy which gives us the premise for this week’s episode of Universal Basic Guys. For my money, this show is reminding me quite a bit of early Family Guy leaning towards the Peter Griffin plots because Peter made a career of buying dumb shit and like Family Guy this series is not afraid to lean the other way towards a more sci-fi flair which is what brings us to our climax when Mark’s friend and my new favorite character “Artie” builds an Iron Man-like suit for the Hoagie Bros. to go nuts with. The introduction of Artie certainly emboldens my pitch for the show’s premiere episode to feature the end of the hot dog factory that these boys worked at because here we are a few episodes in and JUST meeting this crazy guy that builds robots that everyone else seemed to know already except for the viewer. Same goes for Murph who has a lot more explaining to do with that ankle bracelet.

Tammy’s bit was a bunch of fun also and, quite frankly, if someone sent me cookies and flowers seven days a week I’d let them go crazy. But in this day and age of #Metoo and whatnot I’m sure going the route the writers did with the Tammy/Paul plot was the correct move, call me old-fashioned.

Overall a giggle-filled episode of Universal Basic Guys with some pretty hilarious ideas coupled with an homage to Buffalo Wild Wings whom I’m sure will look very familiar to the show’s target demo and market.
