English Dub Season Review: SHY Season Two

Overview:

While walking around the city after school, Teru runs into Ai Tennouji, whom she quickly befriends and begins to open up toward. Teru quickly learns more about her new friend’s past—she has run away from her village in search of something directly related to Teru’s work as Shy. While the threat of Amarariruku continues to loom over her, Teru must decide how closely she is willing to work with the mysterious Ai.

Our Take:

This felt less like a second season and more of a continuation of the first season. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but it just feels odd when they market something as a new season. But I will say that this “season” was a lot more enjoyable than the first for me. That’s saying something because one of my favorite characters is Pepesha and the last arc of the first season followed her for a large portion of it. But I might have a new favorite character, that would be Ai Tennouji.

Ai’s character design was cool and I liked her story. I was a little disappointed that it seems like she won’t be staying with Shy anymore but she seems like a character that will be back sooner rather than later. Speaking of Shy, her development was something to see. While I’m sure she’s still anxious she came out of her shell and stood up for friends when she needed to. I loved how she got a sword and her fiery persona is reflected in actual flames coming off of her. I wanted to see more from Ai but I was happy that Shy got some time to shine in her own show.

As of this writing, there has been no announcement for a third season and sadly I’ll be surprised if there is one. I hope there is because with My Hero Academia wrapping up and One Punch Man taking forever to get animated, a consistent superhero anime would be nice to have. But one thing I’ve learned lately is that we can’t give up on our favorite anime getting continuations even five or more years down the line.
