OUR TAKE

New show, with two episodes at once to review! Though apparently there has been quite a push to make this series a multi-faceted franchise. It started as a manga in 2020, was made into a live action drama and released on Netflix last year, is having an anime made this year, and next year will have a live action film, which I assume will be cast different than the live action series. Clearly there is something here that distributors think will make them some cash, but does the anime tell us much about what that something may be? Well, based on these first two episodes…I’m not certain. It definitely has a hook with its premise, two dudes who want to make THE MOST MONEY, with one being basically a tech wizard and the other being the biggest shit talker, combining their talents to rise in the tax brackets until they reach their goal. However, based on some flashfowards to the present day when the two of them are quick billionaires, we only see things from Gaku, the tech guy’s point of view. Clearly there are some mysteries here that need to be filled in as we go through the story, among them being what the hell these two did or sold to even get this rich in the first place.

Not only are the character designs rather ugly and hard to look at, the dynamic between Haru and Gaku is, at least currently, not very compelling. And this mystery about how they got this money is not that intriguing, especially when it should be a very easy thing to explain. But frankly, given the state of things in the world, following two randos try to become obscenely rich is not the most endearing goal. Perhaps the reason Haru is not around in the flashforwards is because he watched Requiem for a Dream and got the wrong message and died from too much ass to ass for all we know. That said, it is at least understandable to see how having one guy who is the ultimate bullshitter and another guy who can back that up with tech skills could at least get somewhat far, the main question is how they get AS FAR as they are apparently going to get. But I guess those are things to be answered within the next six months as we try to find out how they beat the Trillion Game.
