English Dub Review: Rick and Morty: The Anime “A Pain In The Back”

Overview

It’s life mostly as usual for the Smith family; Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses; Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation; Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl; they’re all an anime.

Our Take

I know a lot of social media comments rag on this show, but I gotta tell ya, this thing’s pretty fucking good. Yes, I know the production value isn’t anywhere near where Rick and Morty is or even a low-grade anime, but that’s what happens when you work with a poverty network like Adult Swim…ya gotta make cutbacks!

I will tell you the area of Rick and Morty: The Anime doesn’t make cutbacks…the story. Yes, this week’s episode shares some strands of comparison to the Emmy-winning “The Vat of Acid” episode in that we’re getting an episode that sneak peeks us into the future about a potential love story coming to pass, but the forward-flash was beautifully done and really a fantastic way for this show to go out.

I implore you, check out Rick and Morty: The Anime. Season seven of the OG show was trash and this one feels more like when the show created by Justin Roiland had far more heart akin to the early days. The music composition of the series is also very much a standout, and Takashi Sano should be commended for taking such a task like trying to dig this franchise back up and make it relevant again.
