English Dub Review: Nina the Starry Bride “The Origin of Sin”

Overview:

In the wake of the death of Fortna’s princess-priestess, Prince Azure purchases a young woman from the slums who shares her most defining feature. He sets out to turn her into a convincing impostor to cover up the death of his half-sister.

Our Take:

If you’ve read the old story The Prince and the Pauper, you might know where this story wants to go. Only in this case, the character that Nina is replacing is dead so there isn’t much of a chance for her to be found out. However, we never see the princess’s body, so perhaps she will eventually return, which would be an interesting wrinkle to the story. If you’ve ever seen the movie My Fair Lady there are also similarities to that with Nina needing to be taught how to read and write and act like a noble.

The first episode was decent and I’m intrigued to see what’s going to happen as we get further. There’s even a “wicked stepmother” so this anime gives off more of a fairytale feel than I’m used to. It remains to be seen if this is going to be a typical story or if there are going to be some twists along the way but so far it’s a decent watch.
