English Dub Review: Demon Lord 2099 “Cyberpunk City Shinjuku”

Overview:

Long ago, Demon Lord Veltol was defeated in battle by the Hero, but thanks to his reincarnation magic, he has returned after 500 years. Veltol is keen to resume his world domination once more, but his vassal, Machina—one of the Six Dark Peers—reveals an unexpected truth.

Our Take:

When I saw that Ian Sinclair played the lead of this series I couldn’t help but think this was going to be a comedy. He can be serious for sure, just watch Fruits Basket, but normally he’s a silly guy. Something tells me he will get a chance to be both silly and serious in this show. He plays the Demon Lord Veltol, and after five hundred years he has been reincarnated in the year 2099. No this isn’t in the same universe as a lot of Marvel’s 2099 series but it does take place on Earth. Well… a version of Earth that collided with the world Veltol hails from. It’s not quite an isekai but it has the flavor of one.

I had zero expectations for this show and I was pleasantly surprised by the first episode. The relationship between Veltol and Machina will be fun to watch I think. It reminds me a bit of The Devil is a Part-Timer because Machina’s apartment is so small and she doesn’t make much money. But there are some societal norms that cropped that seem interesting. How would we as a society react to beings that are immortal? In this world they are met with fear and hunted down, so something tells me being the Demon Lord isn’t as big a flex as it used to be. I’m excited to see where this goes from here.
