English Dub Review: Dandadan “Kicking Turbo Granny’s Ass”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Okarun and Momo arrive at the tunnel to confront Turbo Granny.  Just when they think they’ve won, a giant crab spirit crashes through the wall.

Our Take:
Now that we’re all caught up with those who watched the first three episodes early through the “First Encounter” film, it’s time to battle Turbo Granny!  However, despite Momo and Okarun’s profound abilities, Turbo Granny has proven herself to be one formidable elderly spirit.  She not only fights dirty when being challenged to a game of tag, but she also has a massive freaking crab spirit by her side.  Battle-focused episodes in anime are characterized by their fast pace and intensity, mainly when showcasing the characters’ impressive strengths and strategies. Additionally, these episodes take advantage of their animation style to effectively convey the dynamic and visually striking nature of the action sequences.
Unsurprisingly, “Kicking Turbo Granny’s Ass” is another sublime addition to this catalog, with almost the entire episode focusing on Momo and Okarun’s thrilling game of tag.  Regarding the red-tinted presentation and Moko-chan’s direction for the action scenes, the episode is a non-stop and amazingly stylized roller coaster ride that would’ve been a bit too bloated for its own good.  Instead, it was a vibrant blast of vitality and spiritual pizazz that’s right up there with some of the best anime episodes of 2024.  I would even say that Momo and Okarun outrunning Turbo Granny and her spirit army is one of my favorite anime moments of the year due to the animation and unique approach to the classic musical pieces William Tell Overture and the Can Can.  So, if you haven’t caught up with the show or didn’t even watch it, you’re seriously missing out on this grand piece of anime goodness.
