English Dub Review: The Unwanted Undead Adventurer “Unwanted Undead”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

While hunting weak monsters in a labyrinth, perennial bronze-class adventurer Rentt discovers an unexplored passageway.  He excitingly begins searching it, hoping to earn wealth and renown, but instead encounters a dragon, the strongest of all monsters.

Our Take:

Being a low-class adventurer is one thing, but being undead is enough to retire early.  However, in this particular anime, there are actually some benefits of being an undead skeleton.  Well, aside from living without any skin.  The Unwanted Undead Adventurer introduces viewers to its protagonist, Rentt Faina, an unskilled yet persevering adventurer working under the Bronze class for a decade.  But, he has been making a small living fighting smaller enemies like slimes, hoping to become a Mythril-class adventurer.

While exploring the Moon’s Reflection Labyrinth, Rentt discovers an unexplored tunnel, but he realizes too late that it led to the dragon’s lair, resulting in his demise.  However, instead of reincarnating into another world like the other isekai shows, Rentt is resurrected as an animated skeleton.  Unfortunately, due to the undead being considered dangerous, Rentt couldn’t return home in his new form.  But on the bright side, he’s able to gain Existential Evolution by absorbing his enemies’ spirit enemies until he becomes a Ghoul.

“Unwanted Undead” follows the traditional routine of introducing viewers to a show’s world-building, protagonist, and RPG-like rules via Rentt’s narration.  The latter reflects Rentt’s new form, in which he absorbs spirit energy from enemies to increase his power and evolve, with the energy being EXP points.  But how was the episode execution-wise?  Aside from Rentt’s constant narration and some rough CGI effects, “Unwanted Undead” mostly accomplishes its task of introducing its “RPG Adventurer” world-building and the protagonist’s goal.  While it may seem like another “Fantasy Adventurer” anime in terms of its formula, its concept sounds like it could provide some interesting ideas in later episodes to keep the show alive.

Error happened.
