Review: Smiling Friends “Charlie Pim And Bill Vs. The Alien”

Overview

A thirty-four-year-old man named Pim sets out to save his mother on Mars after she is abducted by Martians.

Our Take

Did anyone else know Pim Pimling was 34 years-old? In any event, this week’s Smiling Friends was absolutely bonkers really right from the get-go. For starters, we had a multitude of guest stars that I was rather impressed were able to fit in a quarter-hour series. Internet animation producers like Mike, Jay and Rich Evans from Red Letter Media and Mr. Salad Fingers himself David Firth guest star and everyone brought their “A’-game because the results are in, I checked pulses, and everyone sticks their landing.

For my money, aside from Mr. Boss who is mostly absent this week, “Charlie Pim And Bill vs The Alien”‘s shining moment was the extra-long argument that ensued between Charlie and the aliens. Moreover, we got quite a bit of vomiting going down this week which used to be a big no-no on Adult Swim’s P&L department but maybe that rule went away in the last few years. The different animation styles this week were a lot of fun, from the stop-motion aliens, to all of the character designs for the different aliens, nothing ever really looks the same in this show and it’s certainly one of the franchise’s core strengths.

Next week it looks like we’re getting a Mr. Boss episode that I’m already going to fall in love with because Mr. Boss is my spirit animal, until then, make sure you add this one to your watch list because Smiling Friends brings it.
