English Dub Review: Re:Monster “Re:Fulgent”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

While escorting the bratty princess, the twins suddenly become pregnant with Gobrou’s kids and instantly go into labor only days after conceiving. They each give birth to a child, a half-ogre son and daughter. Later, Gobrou assists a nearby party against a bunch of larger monsters and the next day, gains his final form change.

OUR TAKE

Just because it bears repeating, this is The One Where the Protagonist Mouth Feeds His Ripped Off Arm to his In-Labor Twin Wives. No, that is not exaggeration or hyperbole. It is not inaccurate in any way. It is simply a thing that happens within the runtime of the episode that someone thought, at some point, was an okay thing to write, and then someone else thought was an okay thing to animate. It’s hardly the only weird thing in this episode, considering there’s a lot of focus on a couple women, who up until this point DID NOT HAVE ACTUAL NAMES, getting instantly pregnant and then giving birth, but it is most definitely the weirdest thing by a country mile. It also completely overshadows the fact that Gobrou finally got to his last form and got a ton of gibberish sounding upgrades and power ups, but much like Batman v Superman is now just “the movie with the piss jar and the guy who shouted Martha”, this episode can’t even be known for its more significant character moment because someone decided to throw in force fed pregnancy cannibalism. Heck, the only reason this episode does not have the lowest score possible is because it actually had the form change, but it’s not gonna make it a good one.

Like holy shit, man. Let me once again remind you that these two characters have been collectively referred to as “The Twins” since they showed up in the second episode, and I have had ZERO reason to bring them up in the last TWO MONTHS, but now they suddenly become relevant only because they need to act out some pregnancy fetish material. There’s really no other explanation I can think of as to why this happened the way that it did. Also, I feel like it’s worth bringing up that, as the show has been so kind to remind us, Gobrou in this world is only four months old himself, so his kids are gonna be the equivalent of like teenagers by the end of the series, which let me remind you is in just two more episodes. Personally, I don’t think it can get here fast enough, because I am so ready to wash my hands of this whole thing entirely. So, let’s just get these last couple of episodes out of the way so that I may mentally eject Re:Monster from my memory for all time.
