English Dub Review: A Condition Called Love “My First Confession”

Overview

Hotaru, at long last, is able to tell Saki how she feels. But his reaction isn’t exactly what she was expecting, leading her to contemplate what they’re both looking for in a relationship.

Our Take

After making their relationship official post-valentine’s day, Hotaru and Saki decided to test their feelings by briefly distancing themselves from each other, confirming their love. Now, the focus shifts to Saki’s upbringing and family background, providing a deeper understanding of his character beyond Hotaru’s backstory explored earlier.

The blossoming romance between our leads seems to have a decent flow even if it stumbles in places, such as when Saku abruptly suggests giving each other room to grow. at least until much later on when some unexpected stuff begins to happen. Also, the flashbacks in the post credits hints more about Saki’s past and some advice he took to heart in his youth…

Overall, while Saki’s past and present struggles add complexity to the narrative, the show navigates them with a mix of sweet moments and challenges. As their relationship progresses, I remain hopeful for Saki to have a positive transformation in terms of how he approaches and responds to people and situations. As it’s not every day a couple realistically talks about this stuff with such maturity in most romance stories and it helps keep the characters grounded in this slice of life romance.
