Review: Krapopolis “Remedial Archeology”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Tyrannis somehow gets ahold of a magic shell that puts him in contact with a trapped archeologist, who tells him that Krapopolis is only remembered as a lost city with a mad king. Meanwhile, Delira gets taken by Shlub to a monster wedding to disastrous results.

OUR TAKE

And just like that we’re at the first season finale for Krapopolis, which somehow got a longer season than not just every other animated comedy this season, but really overall, since they usually get no more than twenty two, but I guess this is special and gets a twenty third one for some reason. The episode itself is already pretty unique as a premise when it fully involves Tyrannis interacting with the present day, as well as apparently being able to somewhat change events with the knowledge he receives. And it’s plenty fitting that the finale touches on the goal he’s had since the first episode, that being creating a civilization that will be remembered for its contributions to mankind. I just went back and rewatched the first episode (good LORD the animation and voice acting are stiff has hell compared to now) and while the idea of being remembered in the future isn’t a big part of that…well, why would it? Tyrannis is focused on the now, so it’s only when he’s given the knowledge of there even being a future that he considers it. And since Krapopolis isn’t a REAL ancient civilization, it makes sense that it’s been lost to the sands of time.

Tyrannis has definitely gotten the most focus over the course of the season, being the ruler who is trying to push civilization forward and all, so he’s gonna get the focus at the end too. Though to my surprise, his recurring issues with Deliria aren’t so much as hinted at, in fact she’s relegated to the B plot…and not a great one, at that. It mainly plays into the cultural differences between her, a posh and out of touch divine being, and Shlub’s people, a bunch of weirdo monsters, leading to it being shown WHY Shlub keeps her out of stuff like this when she ends up killing all his friends. The situation is KINDA resolved when she SOMEHOW manages to puts all the pieces together into a new sort of monster that they dub “Frankenstein”, which…does not make even the slightest bit of sense, especially since I’m pretty sure the word “chimera” isn’t mentioned once. Deliria and Shlub’s romantic points are actually something I’d consider a highlight of this season but this was most certainly not one of the better uses of that. I wonder if this was ever meant to even be the show’s first season finale, but I suppose I’ll have a better idea of all that when I do the season review later this week. Again, honestly, that eclipse episode still feels like a natural stopping point that they just kinda ended up barreling through, but okay, we’re doing the time travel episode.
