English Dub Review: Vampire Dormitory “Love 5. The pretty boy runs away from home.”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Maina’s confession and Ren’s odd behavior puts Mito in emotional turmoil.  After nearly outing herself, a conversation with Ruka sends her running away from home!  Mito runs into Ren again after some trouble on the streets and finds out his secret.

Our Take:

We’re not even halfway done with the series, and Mito may have already reached her breaking point.  It’s bad enough that she thinks Maina might be Ruka’s true love, but witnessing Ren’s mysterious migraine is just one problem too many.  However, it turned out that it wasn’t just any other migraine.  This week’s episode reveals that Ren also has a secret hidden inside: he’s also a blood-sucking vampire.  We initially knew from his flashbacks that Ren despises vampires because his mother was taken by one, but as it turns out, that vampire was actually his father.  So, you can say that Ren is half-vampire, unlike Ruka, who’s a bloodsucker one hundred percent.

Unfortunately, despite his vampiric abilities, Ren was still deemed an outcast by everyone, including the vampire clan from which he got the powers.  Of course, this results in Mito and Ren finding common ground in being rejected after Ren saves her from a couple of thugs.  But, to no one’s surprise, this also sets up the usual love triangle between Mito, Ren, and Ruka, who spend the entire night looking for Mito.  In a way, it’s basically “Twilight” if two hot guys fighting for their crush are vampires instead of one of them being a werewolf.  However, since Ruka’s feelings for Mito continue to grow, he doesn’t take it too lightly when he finds Mito in bed with Ren.  While I found that scene amusing, the episode shows that the series continues to show signs of its romance tropes blossoming amid its tolerable concept.
